Nothing fills me with more rage than my fellow debaters

Okay, this pisses me off.

I don't have a tv, and with limited access to the internet, national newspapers and radio, I missed the MTV VMAs performance where Brittany Spears kissed Madonna.

WHY DID MY FELLOW DEBATERS NOT HELP A BROTHA OUT AND GIMME THE HEADS UP!?!

I missed Madonna and Brittany Spears kissing! With tongue! Goddamn you all!!!

This is perhaps the greatest thing I ever to be witnessed by mankind and I missed it! AAAAARRRRGGGGG!!!

I was going to write a whole spiel about how it was the lowest possible clutch at attention/ratings that pop culture has yet produced, but you know what?

I MISSED BRITTANY FUCKING SPEARS AND MADONNA KISSING!!!

I hate every one of my "friends" for not telling me about this.

Dude. With the possible exception of Law and Order, there is nothing replayed more often than the VMAs. It'll be on four or five times a week. In fact, I saw the whole thing on a news show ABOUT the kiss, so chances are, you'll get to see it.

Dude, 2 things.

1. I still don't have a tv, so I'll miss the reruns. And come to think of it I miss Law and Order too. Good show.

2. That isn't the point. The point is that you should have been shouting this from the fucking rooftops, and not leave me to suffer on my own without the knowledge that somewhere in the world, Brittany Spears and Madonna kissed; and maybe- just maybe- they're lying in bed together right now.

I considered watching the MTV Video Music Awards, but I hate MTV, and decided it would be more enlightening to watch Army of Darkness for the 1,000,000th time. That movie is bomb.

I'm with you, Decline, I want to see Ash walk up to Britney and say "Hail to the king, baby" before kissing her a la madonna.

and then use his boomstick on the following bands:
good charlotte
a simple plan
a new found glory
metallica

Now that would be good television.

Dude, I want the boom stick from the final scene where he shoots 20 rounds without reloading. That'd be AWESOME.

Nah, I have a problem shelling out 60 bucks for nosebleed seats for a band past their prime... even if I could see them on a bill with such legendary bands as Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit...

I'm not saying they're all bad, bit I think their best days are behind them. In fact, it was "Nothing else Matters" and "unforgiven" that convinced me to stick with the guitar. But nowadays...

......you have no idea what u r missing. I have been to alot of mettalica shows and they are nowhere near past their prime...lp and lb are meer fodder for the real show and i'd pay $200 for a ticket to see that show again...metallica is still an unbelievable band.

I saw a ticket available for $95...

For the same price, I could see:
Alkaline Trio: $15
Dan Bern: $15
Weezer, Sparta: $30
Social Distortion, Offspring, Pennywise, X, TSOL: $35

for equally awesome shows. But to each his own. Live music kicks ass, I can understand where you're coming from.

one of the best shows i ever saw was metallica live in seoul korea in 98...talk about an experience...and of course it helps being 6 foot tall in a country where the average hieght was like 5'8".....
those other bands u listed are good and live music is live music...i also own every single metallica album ever made to include all 4 ep's(came out before you where born)...so u could say i have grown with them and have a better appreciation for where they are now.

So, since you are so much older than me, do you know if there is any truth to the myths?

That MTV once showed "music videos" and not just reruns of Real World/Road Rules Challenge XVIII. Could it be?

yes it is true they used to show nothing but videos....ahh those were the days....when mtv air their first show people were thinking that the fans would never go for it....now its all shows no videos...they really started doing shows/movies during the early 90's...but the 80's...straight music videos baby.....thats when headbangers ball was actually worth watching...ricky ratman...lol....
i guess that mtv2 is supposed to be the return to the old days...but it will never match the original....oh yeah there was a time when a vid could be number 1 for months on the daily top ten...way before trl came on the scene.

You know Metallica is past its prime when...

They do a song with Ja Rule singing the lyrics. It came out two summers ago, and I don't even remember the name of the song it was so terrible. I believe it was a new song (not a cover), and Metallica played while Ja Rule sang. Talk about heartbreaking. You could've put a gun to my head and I would've preferred that over what I was listening to.

i actually have that track somewhere....the deal was that metallica laid down a track and ja rule laid down vocals like 4 months later...so that track has a sketchy past.

Whoah, this morphed into a merrits of Metallica thread.

AWESOME!!! I get to be critical of Metallica. They are one of the most unjustly over-hyped bands that everybody claims used to be great and are "bringing the rock" today but looking at the sum-total of thier life's work they never produced one remotely good record and remain validated in the "artistic vision" today only by those redneck-camero-driving-mullet-and-mustache-wearing-basement-meth-lab-accident-prone mutants that live next door to me in AR and Avril La-fucking-vigne who covered "Fire" or "Fuel" or whatever over-produced crap that thing was when in reality thier legacy is going to be declaring legal warfare on said rednecks who chose to download an MP3 instead of paying the jacked up prices that Metallica endorse via thier major label contracts and setting thier frontman on fire [despite the fact that he didn't have the sense to die on us all].

Also, Lars Ulrich is a troll.

Whoo. I haven't vented on a Hindu Cow in a while.

And as a pre-empt for all of you who want to defend the honor of "Kill Em' All" "Master of Puppets" and "Ride the Lightning"- Iron Maiden was cooler, since you could like them both sincerelly and ironically simultaneously.

Also, metal sucks.

Fucking bring it.

i love it when young people like brando (whomi have some respect for from nb) mouth off on something that they have no clue about.

if not for that overhyped band there wouldn't be a korn, or any other hard rock band even remotely close to your radio today.....and if you knew half of the genius that was cliff burton you wouldn't down play earlier works that you can not comprehend....look at the riffs he wrote....
on napster...i think lars said it best in a recent interview...he said that he didn't care that people downloaded their shit...but at least let the album come out...the reason they were upset was thatr there were 4 versions of I disapear out before they even released the finished product...hell metallica has given away more music to their fans than almost any other artisit...they used to allow people to bring video cameras and other recording devices into their shows!!!!
infact the video cliff em all is made up almost entirely of bootleg video.

i'll admit the new album wasn't what i originally expected but it has grown on me the more i listen to it...the music is actually pretty deep and the lyrics are as well...metallica has never been just a face value band..all their shit has a meaning that all of us can relate to.

brando i am sorry you didn't have the chance to grow with the band but they are the only band to have 7 records on the billboard top 200 at the same time and have had 4 on the 200 longer than any other artist in history....but hey millions are wrong and you are right....

sorry they arn't as simple as dave matthews...and no i am not a
redneck-camero-driving-mullet-and-mustache-wearing-basement-meth-lab-accident-prone mutants that you talked about.I am a suit wearing-clean shaven-short hair wearing( a high n tight to be exact)-chevy impala driving-married- father- that makes around 65k a year fan...oh yeah and i carry the responsibilty of soliders under my charge...so watch your little hast g's their kid.

peace

p.s. sorry i almost forgot...what do u know of maiden...or judas priest..or anyother band that predates your young life...that makes you the authority on the music i grew up to.

Show of hands. How f-ing annoying is it when people tell you you can't criticize stuff whose original release you were too young for?
I missed Joan Baez and Bob Dylan at the Monterey folk festival in the 70s but I know they both kick ass. And there are plenty of sucky artists who predate my life as well. Don't play one of the silliest cards that exists in music fandom.

dre,
i totally understand the arg u are making...however, how is it that people like brando make the claim that band x sucks when they don't have the historical refrence with the band and their foundation is about 10 years behind the music that they critik. i am not saying you can't understand but it is obvious that some don't...why??? cause they can listen to it but they are not hearing it(another quote from a great older movie)...so brando is listening to metallica but he isn't hearing it or comprehending it and his comment made that painfully obvious.

peace

airassault,

I fully acknowledge your right to love Metallica. In fact, it doesn't make me think less of you as a person. Or as a faceless handle on a message board.
That said, I think you and Brendo are talking past each other. Brendo is contending that Metallica releases bad music. You're stating that they are one of the most influential bands in history.
There's no question about your point. (Yes Brendo, even if they were just ripping off Diamondhead and NWOBHM, they had a severe cultural and musical impact) Brendo, however, is entitled to his opinion. He didn't grow up with them and his tastes didn't change with them (may be that's why he thinks their new albums aren't very good, like I do)
I think we're all missing the point here: Simple Plan is areally, really terrible band. Can't we all agree on that?

Peace. Love. Soul.

Hey Ken, thanks for speaking your mind. I like to speak mine.

Before I begin: It's Brendo, not Brando. BRENdan Ogrady. Get it?

Now then... Thank you for assuming that I know nothing about what I'm talking about. Actually, as someone who's read my posts on this site before, it surprises me that you don't notice that music is my field of passion and by far the subject I am most knowledgable about. In fact, most people who know me personally grant that pretty much the only thing I am an expert in is music.

That isn't to say my Anti-Metallica rant was fact, because it was a fun [and actual] opinion I hold that I like to needle people with. However to claim that I have no clue about this is assinine. This is what I do.

Next: Fuck Korn. Fuck Limp Bizkit. Fuck the vast majority of those bands on "My" radio. [And what the fuck is that? Again, how many rants against Clearchannel and corporate music machines do I have to post before people stop making the idiot assumption that generational marketing is true for all people. I take personal offense at that shit].

Cliff Burton was a genius? Nay my misguided [apparent?] elder. Lemmy is a genius. Dee Dee Ramone was brilliant, [in that decontructionist, spent-my-whole-adult-life-learning-to-paint-as-a-child sort of way]. And all those basslines Burton cribbed from Motorhead and the Ramones were brilliant.

On Napster: Lars is a prick. And a troll. The talk about "inferior" quality music leaking out because demos make the rounds online is pretty stupid ass well, since the Metallica 50th anniversary boxed-set will no doubt be including those "studio outtakes" and "unrealeased versions" that the true fans and completists would want anyway. Boo hoo Lars, the Universal Music group can't target market peopel who for some reason like your band still and they aren't getting bled dry by another $ plan.

Besides, internet leaks are an issue of studio security and Metallica spending too much fucking money on an album because their personal assistants and entourages innevitabely leak the tunes. [And yes there were PAs during the St. Anger sessions- Bob Rock insists on having a staff of gophers around for odd jobs.]

On growing with the band: Yeah, I'm sure they would sound different if I were born in 72'. Who cares. Fuck the Billboard chart. [Who expected me to say that? ] Gasp, a corporate owned and operated sycophantic ass-slapping machine says that people are buying what the same corporations backed millions of dollars into promotion and marketing of as "alternative" and "underground" to legitimize that it has some sort of artistic merrit.

Geez, I hate to use such an obvious one, but joining the Nazi party in Hamburg in 1931 was pretty popular with millions of Germans. Maybe the Nazis were a righteous and warranted outgrowth of the political sentiment of "the masses" at that time. Come to think of it, "St. Anger" makes me want to kill millions of people too... no wait, just myself.

ALSO, no one is right. IT IS AN OPINION. That said, my opinion is right.

Oh hey, more to be personally offended by. I must like Dave Matthews huh? Since they're so much less complicated than those brilliant songsmiths and complex lyrical masterminds in Metallica? Well maybe I should start to now, since by your logic those last 3 Dave albums debuting at #1 means they are good. I don't think so, but your millions of music consumers have spoken...

Uuuuummmmm. Okay, that's about all then huh? Oh yeah, jarheads like Metallica too. If I wanted to be offensive I would make some imperialist crack about killing babies in Vietnam or something [as you probably guessed I don't have kneejerk respect for the uniform], but I'm not here to be an asshole. I'm here for the fun and open exchange of opinion, and I hope you're enjoying it as much as I am.

And c'mon, the mutant thing was funny.

Much love and respect.

brendo....got it right this time...while i appreciate your rant i still disagree with you on several levels...remember that the big corp didn't make metallica...they were huge on an indie label way before sony...remember megaforce records...hell they had a few other bands u probably hate...anthrax for instance...and i also hate limp durst ( a more appropriate name)...i howevere love korn...something about a brooding base line i like. i hate dave...to lets get high and wear tie die for me...but my lil sis loves him...while i don't have a fondness for too many jarheads they are useful for somethings (just what i am unsure of...the army can do it all...but thats another thread)...but overall you sound jaded on my heroes of metal...burton was a genius and if you listen to his riffs and fusion of classical guitar you would take notice to that...i am in no way downplaying the influences on metallica..namely deep purple, dimondhead...but you have to admiot that this band has influenced almost every other rock band that has followed...staind, linkin park, korn, etc.... they are regarded as the best metal band of all time by many in the industry and by their peers....dude just give the devil his due...next up...why country music sucks...lol
