I was hoping to establish a thread here on NB that compiled as many tournament dates as possible into one place. I know tournament dates are scattered across NB—but that’s just it, they are scattered; and I know that the NPDA site ends up having a fairly comprehensive calendar—but to my knowledge that’s not up for 2012-13 and I don’t know when it will be. I imagine that some teams are already starting to make some rudimentary travel choices for next year (I know we are already doing so, as is our regional forensics conference) and there are also some programs that may be trying to decide if/when they might hold a tournament and would like to know what dates are optimal. It just seems like a useful resource to have. I apologize if this seems redundant or if you feel it unnecessary—but if that’s the case I suppose you can ignore this thread ;-). If someone has a better solution, please share. So, what I’d request is a post here to this thread with the following info: -- Tournament Dates (actual days of debate competition) -- Tournament Location (School and City) -- URL for Tournament Invite if available -- Number of Preliminary Rounds/Swing Status -- Number of anticipated divisions -- Will there be topic areas? If there seems to be some important bit of info I’m missing, please mention it. I will try to compile the tournament info into a monthly schedule that I will periodically update on this thread by editing this first initial post so as to always have the calendar at the top of the thread and will then bump occasionally. Again, my intention is just to do this for everyone’s convenience (including my own).

Not necessarily a better solution, but a perm - please make sure to also send this information to me directly... my username at bethel.edu. I want to make sure things get into the COFO calendar, and my time at Net Ben tends to decrease as the season starts.
Also, the COFO website will be starting a new section for workshops of all types (parli, policy, LD, etc.). So, please send that information too. Thanks! |

GGI is tentatively going to be on October 20-21, and UPS will (not tentatively) be the following week (26-28). We are committed to not overlapping with UPS (which is one of the cornerstones of our schedule) and so we are moving our date from the announced date. I apologize for the confusion and we'll have an invitation out quite soon.

I am assuming that Whitman will still be a swing, no??
-----------that is the current plan. may change based on what the npte board does about points. Also, will the Northwest Warmup @ Bellevue have topic areas this year? -----------that is the plan but as noted, i'm thinking about this. i think given the number of non-topic area tournaments for the nw, we probably should have some. i still think they are good for debate.

I agree with you, Jim. I like topic areas. They offer a combination of the "breadth" that we get in parli and some of the "depth" that you get in policy. My concerns are that we are seeing a proliferation in topic areas. In my mind this can have less-than-positive consequences: -- steady exclusion of "breadth" in favor of "depth", which can result in a diminution of the think-on-your-feet skills that parli uniquely develops -- another potential added advantage for "big" well-resourced programs who can simply apply far more research hours than a "smaller", resource-limited program (for instance, a student-run program with 2-3 teams and no institutional support can't be reasonably expected to compete with a squad that has 2-4 full-time coaches, 15-20 debaters [half of them on scholarship], in terms of research hours). And I say this as a coach at a program that most would consider "big". -- it's becoming increasingly difficult to prepare for multiple back-to-back topic area tournaments when we only get 3-4 weeks with each set of topics. This has potential academic impacts as well. It's not the same as policy, where you have a whole year to dig ever deeper into a topic. We get 3-4 weeks to madly scramble and then we're (largely) done with that topic (and probably only got to use half of the material we prepped). In other words, while there are most definitely benefits to the focused research of topic areas, I think the saturation might be taking us toward (if not already past) a point of diminishing returns. I would in no way advocate the elimination of topic area tournaments, just a swing back toward greater balance. Nor is my request for that bit of information about a tournament anything other than simply a request for information. And having said that, I like that the NW warm-up has topic areas to start off the season, and I like that Whitman has topic areas to close off the regular season. =) It's all that crap in the middle that worries me... =) And thanks (everyone) for the tournament updates. Keep them coming if you have info that helps complete the calendar!

An important and relevant question... one among many that become easier to answer when people have a broader view of what tournaments are happening and when.
Thus, the intended message: if anyone out there has confirmed dates for a tournament (whether it is your tournament or not), please share those dates here so that people can make more informed decisions. As Konrad points out, many of us are trying to figure out season schedules that are practical for our school and/or the hosting of our own tournament(s), and a lot of that has to do with the timing of other tournaments, both regional and national. Thanks for the info.

Not going to comment further on our choice of dates except to point out that we are inevitably going to have to go back-to-back with somebody, and that whatever date we put in our invitation will be the date when our tournament will be held.
BTW, would you mind PM'ing me your email address?

GSL Swing
Will be Jan. 4-6.
This year we will be: 1. Considering STRONGLY the elimination of topic areas. Let us know your thoughts. 2. Considering STRONGLY including CX/Prep time (i.e., alternative use time) 3. WILL diversify food. Todd Graham WILL get his Chipotle desire fulfilled, or something comparable, but local. 4. WILL continue to host IE's, PARLI, and LD, but will separate the schedules and prohibit cross entry in order to create a more efficient, i.e., more livable, schedule. Final schedule will be determined following word of NPTE decisions on qualifications, etc. 5. WILL respond to your constructive feedback and great ideas as long as they fit within our immutable institutional constraints. 6. WILL feature a reception for all community college students hosted by the UofU's office of recruitment and enrollment. email me at m dot middleton at utah dot edu. Your feedback is important and we are committed to responding to the excellent ideas about change being considered in our community. Have a great, safe, productive summer! Mike |

This is awesome. Do other schools do this? This just strikes me awesome idea that goes with the "grow the activity" thread.

as you should be. it's these kinds of things that destabilize privilege and topple hegemony, risking global nuclear annihilation. just you wait, we're all dead.

Smitty is correct. Puget Sound will be October 26-28, 2012. Thanks to Berkeley for jumping back a weekend.
We are debating the round robin. I like them. They are a good experience and the double-judge format gives a unique experience and preparation for the NPTE. We are, however, considering moving a a 7 or 8 round tournament beginning Friday after 4pm (have to wait for classrooms) and ending prelims on Saturday at a reasonable (to me at least) time. Elims on Sunday. We will likely not use topic areas but will use MPJ and likely continue to use at least a 5 category ranking system. If I am in the mood and you are all nice to me, I will again make fun of your facebook pages in the awards ceremony. For some odd reason that seems be something most people enjoy. Hmm, go figure. |

Ok, last pronouncement:
The GGI will be at a date TBA, but either September 29-30, October 6-7, or October 20-21. We will decide on a final date and release an invitation by May 15. If you have strong feelings about the date (i.e. you can only come one date but not the other 2, you'd strongly prefer one date, etc.) PLEASE email me at lj dot asmitty at gmail dot com. Thanks, Alex

Okay, so how did the Midwest Co-op get added to the calendar in my original post? I didn't put it there, as I didn't know the dates until I saw them in "my" post.
Obviously it's fine that it's there, but how??? I can only assume the dates are correct...

Ah-ha. I didn't know Moderators could internally edit our posts.
Jeff, you haven't been messing with my email, too, have you? ;-) ETA: rather than creating another new post... anyone know dates for Pacific's fall tournament? Seems like a particularly important one this year.
