Haiti
Why do we not debate about Haiti?

Because the colonialism kriticism needs to work harder for its links.
All jokes aside, that's actually a really good question. I think that right now we actually debate about Haiti, but only in the context that we use it as an impact, so we debate about the merits of that impact and do not debate of the merits of Haiti relief as a topic of debate. Personally, I think that this tournament (Point Loma), as well as the second half of the (Not So) Mile High Swing, would have been a great opportunity to debate this topic, and it worries me that this topic has not come up as a resolution worth 20 minutes of our preparation time and the 40 or so minutes we spend in the round debating the topic. I hope to see this issue resolved.

How, exactly, would you frame a resolution that wasn't slanted -- and that allowed multiple cases?
Personally, think there are some topics that aren't debatable -- I'm not sure that Haiti is one of them -- but, the category isn't empty.

At the 2nd half of NMH, we did have a quarters resolution on Haiti (I can't remember the exact resolution, but it dealt with permanent immigration opportunities for Haitian citizens).
That being said, the earthquake occurred on the Monday preceding the tournament, and I remember looking at several different possible topics on the issue, and yeah- most of them seemed to be quite unbalanced. Especially in that moment, Haitian relief seemed to be an imperative, not a debateable issue. I think the better debate is not what we do in the short term, but what we do in the long term. I saw something similar post-Katrina; the debate about rescue/immediate relief did not occur, but long term changes such as moving New Orleans, long term disaster mitigation and other potential relief efforts were used as topics in the weeks and months after Katrina. |

We debated annexation of Haiti in a practice round the other day. I thought the topic lent itself to an interesting debate.

"Haiti sh become a UN protectorate" There's a res you could use if you want.
For Cliffs at least, Skip requested resolutions be submitted from the community, and from what I heard there weren't too many submitted. It's entirely possible that there weren't any submitted about Haiti. |

It's too soon for impact turns.
In all seriousness, it's just an odd thing to have to write a resolution about it. Probably a little hard to make the argument that X aid shouldn't be given. I really think that the solution would having Haiti as the actor. Maybe someone should submit this as an NPTE topic area. A well crafted topic area for Haiti could be great.
