ETA: Hold the phone, WKY has a round robin team?!?
ETA 2: Generally, they are called "round robins", not just "robins" ![]() the siu team will be Kevin Calderwood and Brandon Merrell. Todd Graham will most likely be our judge. The invite will probably explain it easier then I can, but here is how it works. 20 teams are broken into four pods. That means there are 5 teams in each pod. Each round, one team from each pod will receive a bye. You debate everyone in your pod once, in front of a three judge panel. Based on rumors I have heard, the fifth round debate is supposed to be between who the tournament considers the "first" and "second" seed in each pod (probably based on NPTE rankings). This could totally be a lie, but this is what I have always heard. They clear teams based on W/L and then overall ballot count. For example, last year we cleared over USAFA in our pod (even though we lost to them) because we won 3 debates on a 3-0, and lost one on a 2-1. They won 2 debates on a 3-0, one a 2-1, and lost one on either a 2-1 or a 3-0. Four teams clear to semifinals. Then it acts like a normal tournament. Usually there are seven judge semifinal panels. The two teams in finals generally debate in front of a nine judge panel, that is made up of mostly judges from the community. One year we had two different people running for the same seat in Congress, and another we had a panel ranging from Bill Neesen to Gary Rybold to members of the San Diego-area community. I hope this helps. -Kevin

1. I have no idea what is up with the WKY team. My guess is that they would be coming out for IEs and LDs anyway, and since they had a bid, decided to accept it? Or at least that is the plausible scenario I have constructed in my fragile little mind.
2. The inner workings of the RR are a mystery shrouded in secrecy with a helping of intrigue. Either that or I just haven't bothered to figure it out. 3. If you are in the final round, our poli sci professors have been used in the past. If that is the case this year, feel free to ask me about them. |

I'm pretty sure the pods are organized by NPTE rankings (kinda similar to the pod system in the World Cup using FIFA rankings). I don't know the exact system of organizing the pods, but I think Konrad has done it (if he doesn't still do it) in the past.

The pods may come from the whale watching possible to do in between rounds.

Whale watching isn't possible, but there are lots of ships. The other day I saw an aircraft carrier, and one time I spotted a caravel.

Ian,
Use you imigination. You don't need to see militarism in everything. Watch whales - don't eat them. Gary |

The Pepperdine team will most likely (barring any calamities) be Jordan Kahler and myself.

I saw the same list on the Parli-L. Maybe that was a list of teams that had bids, not ones that had accepted them?
Edit: the RR site also only has 17 teams listed, which means that there are three left to be put up. So, it could be that the list has not been finalized yet? Last edited by SoCalian : 12-23-09 at 06:02 PM. |

The list I posted is the list I received from Skip Rutledge himself, he asked all the recepients to post it on debate related websites.

ok, I told Skip about the confusion, and there should be an update posted to the Parli-L tomorrow, that someone (me unless someone gets to it first) will then cross-post here. Yay!

As much as I have enjoyed to Pt Loma Round Robin in the past, I can assure you that Western Kentucky will not have a team in the RR this year. Sorry, folks.

Apparently WKY will not be competing and CSU LA will be taking their place. I would imagine that team is Mat Swanson and Juan Victorio.

I can guess at some of these. I would imagine UCLA is Chris Maciel and Matt Strawbridge and that UCSD is Hooman Hefzi and Franklin Cuevas.

There is no tabulation software that automatically grids out a round robin, so it has to be done by hand. In some years, the presumed #1 and #2 in a pod have met in Round 5 - in other years, that has not been the case. I get help when setting up the pods, usually from people who are MUCH smarter than me. I send them to Skip and he approves or...

no. not even close. though in the past, i believe they've taken topics from the state of the union. which is basically like saying, "read the news." there will most certainly not be anything you can call "topic areas." |
