Washbeach Swing Jan 8-10

I just wanted to let the people who I have not talked to know that washbeach will be holding the tournament in our normal weekend before the Denver swing. We will offer two full tournaments with as many out rounds as we can justify. The full invite will be out in early October after I get done hosting our high school tournament.

Not true. All it did was rain during the 2008 Beach swing.

All I have to say is that if I don't get Holy Mole (Sp?) I will be very sad b/c they have amazing potato tacos. For those that are vegetarians get the potato tacos or the potato burritos because they are delicious. Also, pack for either cold and rainy or warm and sunny. When we were out there last time it rained the entire time during the tournament but the day before and the day after was pleasant weather if I remember correctly so you never know what's going to happen.

For those of you who love vegetarian Mexican food (which even I do, even though I'm not vegetarian), when you come down for a tournament in San Diego (like Sunset Cliffs), go to Poke'z in dowtown (it's on 10th and E). Excellent potato flautas and potato quesadillas.

+1, pokez is phenomenal

i do wish that cotixan, lolita's, and el zarape were closer to point loma so that more of y'all could find a way to have the best mexican food you've ever eaten. i guess el indio is pretty close and very good but is so touristy and crowded that it's not the same thing.

BEACH FORENSICS
Would like to invite you to Washbeach, to be held January 8-10, 2009 on the campus on Cal State Long Beach.

Washbeach will hold 2 full parliamentary debate tournaments, with both tournaments consisting of 5 preliminary rounds, followed by the largest amount of out rounds allowed (we will go to a partial out round as it is needed). Additionally, there will only be one division, which is open to everyone, and both tournaments will have mutual preferencing of judges. We will also have general topic areas, from which all tournament topics will be generated. The topic areas will be released in early December. The rest of the first tournament will follow normal NPDA rules.

Entries:
Any regularly enrolled undergraduate in a two year or four year college or university may attend. As the tournaments run back-to-back, students may (and are encouraged to) attend both tournaments.

Entries are due by Friday, January 5 at 5:00pm at debateresults.com. This early entry deadline is necessary for the compilation of a list of judges and the distribution of mutual preference and strike forms.

Procedures:
This tournament will follow NPDA rules except where noted.

Topics will be released at a centralized announcement site, and teams will have 20 minutes to prepare and walk to their room. Disclosure of decisions and other oral commentary may be conducted at the discretion of the judge, but please conduct such commentary after the ballot has been returned. We will be attempting to power-match every round without lagging, so a prompt return ensures that the tournament stays on time. A warm room of results will be provided.

Fees:
Fees for each half of the tournament will be $75.00 per debate team, or $150.00 total for teams attending both halves.

Each judge covers 2 debate entries. Uncovered judging fees will also be $75.00 for each half of the tournament, or $150.00 total for team attending both halves. It is cliché, but we would rather have your judges than your money. The tournament directors reserve the right to refuse entry to teams uncovered by a critic. If you have extra judges attending the tournament, please contact the tournament directors, as we may be able to hire them at a healthy stipend.

Judges will be expected to judge all preliminary rounds and through the double octofinal round. After that point, judges will be expected to judge one round past the elimination of their teams.

Hotel:
Housing near Long Beach is at a premium. We urge you to reserve space immediately. Call the Guest House Inn at 562/597-1341. To receive the special rate, mention that you are attending the Winter at the Beach debate tournament. The Guest House is located at 5325 East Pacific Coast Highway. They have given us a rate of $83.00 for a double.

There are a number of other accommodations available in Long Beach, including:
Comfort Inn 562-597-3374
Residence Inn 562-595-0909
Holiday Inn 562-597-4401

Any word on attendance? Washburn will be bringing...

Allen/Knoth
Fiebrantz/Ramsey
Coker/Carlson
Hogan/Lake
French/Bailey
Campfield/Crabtree
Plumlee/Reeves

This tournament should be a lot of fun, and I encourage anybody still undecided to seriously consider heading to Long Beach.
