Puget Sound Inviational parli and IE and round Robin, October 23-25, 2009
Dear, Friends,
Please see the invite pasted below for the 2009 UPS tournament and Zittel Round Robin. We will be adding an IE schedule that will allow debaters to compete in one pattern of IEs with minimal impact on the overall schedule. However, that schedule is currently being evaluated by people who know IE schedules better than I and is subject to change. As an extra incentive, some history: 2008: Top speaker at UPS = 2nd Speaker at NPTE 3rd Speaker at UPS = 1st Speaker at NPTE 2007: Top speaker at UPS = 1st Speaker at NPTE 2006: Top speaker at UPS = 1st Speaker at NPDA 2005: Top two speakers at UPS = 1st and 2nd speakers at NPTE 2005, 6, 7, and 8 a team in finals at UPS was at least in finals of the NPTE with two wins and two second places. Previous semi-final debate at UPS have been the finals round at NPDA. Please contact me at dbuescher@pugetsound.edu with any questions and for round robin bids. Best, Derek __________________________________________________ __ 2009 Puget Sound Logger Invitational Parliamentary Debate and Individual Events Tournament and the 3rd Annual Zittel Round Robin University of Puget Sound Tacoma, WA October 23-25, 2009 Greetings, The University of Puget Sound forensics squad is pleased to invite you to the 2009 Puget Sound Invitational Parliamentary Debate and Individual Events Tournament. The Zittel Round Robin will be held October 23rd and the tournament will be held October 25-26, 2009. We will offer six (6) rounds of novice, junior, and open preliminary debate and all eleven AFA/NIET IEs in open and novice division. We invite you to attend this tournament and enjoy the warmth of the Northwest. Tournament Information The tournament will follow the NPDA rules of competition respective to time limits. We will employ standard time limits 7-8-8-8-4-5. Post announcement preparation time will be 20 minutes. In addition we will do the following: • employ a five (5) category mutual preference judging (mpj) in Open Division of the invitational debate tournament • presets for rounds 1 and 2 with all subsequent rounds power paired. • At minimum, clear all teams with a winning record (4-2) • employ a topic committee of at least three people two of whom are not affiliated with Puget Sound debate • announce topic areas for the tournament no later than October 12, 2009 on "net-benefits" and via e-mail to all directors/coaches expressing interest (we will not announce topic areas for the round robin). • centrally announce all resolutions • provide a "warm room" of results • provide a "wellness" room of healthy snacks and beverages. UPS teams will participate and are eligible for elimination rounds and speaker awards. While we do not expect to have to limit entries, we reserve the right to cap entries at 6 teams per school/per division. Brackets will be broken for elimination rounds. Elimination round sides will be determined by a coin flip. Divisions and Entries We will offer three division of debate--novice, junior, and senior. We reserve the right to collapse junior division if entries are less than five schools with less than 15 total teams. If we collapse junior division those registered for junior will move to their appropriate division (not necessarily open). All restrictions of division entries are based on the most experienced member of the debate team. All students must be enrolled in their college or university and in good academic standing. We will use the NPDA rules on divisions with additional restrictions listed below: Novice: • The student should have no high school debate experience (including policy, parliamentary, Public Debate/Ted Turner, L-D, etc.). • The student should be in the first two semesters of collegiate debate. • Once the student has advanced to elimination rounds more than 3 times, the student should be advanced to the junior or open division. Junior: • The student should be in the first four semesters of intercollegiate debate. • The students should have less than 3 years of competitive debate in high school • The student should not have advanced to elimination rounds more than 3 times in junior or open division. • Once the student has advanced to more than three elimination rounds, the student should be advanced to open. • Any student qualifying to compete in the TOC while in high school must enter Open division. • Any student advancing to an elimination round at either NPDA or NPTE national tournaments must enter Open division. Open Division: • All enrolled students with less then 8 semesters of collegiate debate who still maintain NPDA eligibility may enter open division. A semester counts as competition in more than two tournaments. Registration: Registration will be available at forensicstournament.net. If you have any difficulties with the site please email me. We have used this site several times and have found it reduces errors and makes life easier. • Due Date: You must register your squad by 6:00 PM Pacific Time Monday October 19 • Fax: 253-879-6111 • Email: dbuescher@pugetsound.edu • If necessary you may call in changes to your registration at 253-879-3272. Please call or email changes as soon as you know them. Fees and Judging All fees will be handled at registration times; you do NOT need to send your school fee in advance. Fees will be set by Tuesday October 20 at 5:00 P.M. Drops after that time do not reduce fees as we hire judges, order trophies (please note trophies will be minimalist, but likely include local art and micro-loans and not traditional “plaques” etc. It is unlikely we will have IE finalist awards), and purchase wellness food and continental breakfasts based on your original entry numbers. Please make checks payable to University of Puget Sound. • $125.00 per round robin team. This fee will cover meals for the team and one judge, awards, and hospitality. Each round robin team must be accompanied by one judge. • $35.00 per Friday observer to cover food costs. • $65.00 per invitational team • $7.00 per individual event slot • $125.00 per uncovered debate team • $10.00 per uncovered individual event entry. Schools are not allowed to have more than ten (10) uncovered IE entries. Each debate judge covers two debate teams. Each IE judge covers 10 IE slots. Please note, debate judges will not be counted as IE judges and IE judges will not be counted as debate judges. Overlap of the schedule makes this difficult. Judges for hire will be limited and we cannot guarantee you will be able to hire judging. Please bring your own judges. A judge must be provided to cover at least your first two teams. We will make every effort to hire extra judging for the tournament, but we reserve the right to refuse uncovered teams. Please alert us to the availability of hired judges. Judging obligations extend through the quarter-final round or one round beyond that in which your team is eliminated. The success of the tournament requires judges to meet their professional obligations of judging. Judges should make every effort to make complete yet prompt decisions and turn in ballots prior to any oral critiques. Please understand we want your judges and not your money. Upon the conclusion of the debate we ask that judges/critics (a) make a decision, voting for one and only one team, (b) turn in the ballot, and then (c) offer the teams your oral critique of the round. If a judge fails to a make a decision or gives a double win/loss, the tabroom will flip a coin and assign a winner and a loser. Hotel We plan to reserve a block of rooms at the La Quinta Hotel near the Tacoma Dome a short drive from campus (the hotel for the 2008 NPTE). The block is currently small, but more rooms are expected to be available closer to the tournament. Call 253-383-0146 and tell them you are with “UPS Debate.” In addition, several local hotels offer excellent rates. All within area code 253 North: Central: Motel 6-Fife 922-1270 Sheraton 572-3200 Day’s Inn-Fife 922-3500 Silver Cloud 272-1300 Extended Stay 926-6316 Comfort Inn 926-2301 South: Comfort Inn 538-7998 Holiday Inn Express 539-2020 Days Inn Tacoma 475-5900 Registration: Registration will take place Friday morning (place TBD) on campus at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning in Wyatt Foyer from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. If you are unable to register at that time, make arrangements via e-mail or by calling the numbers listed above. The expectation is the IE competitors will be slotted first and then immediately come to central announce. 2:15 Continue Elims Packets will not be released until first elimination round is under way In 2009, Puget Sound Forensics will host the third annual Zittel Round Robin Tournament. This year’s tournament will take place on Friday October 23 and the invitational will take place on the 24-25th of October. This year’s invitational will include an individual events section on the condition entries for IEs are sufficient to warrant holding the tournament. Here are the preliminary details for the Round Robin, Logger Invitational Parliamentary and IE Tournament. 1. The round robin is intended to showcase the argumentation skills of some of the top ranked teams in the nation. We will offer bids to a total of 10 teams with no more than one initial bid to any single school. 2. Bids are due on or before September 4, 2009 to Derek Buescher at dbuescher@pugetsound.edu. Bids will be announced to directors and on net-benefits no later than September 8, 2009. 3. In the event a team receives a bid and is then unable to attend because of circumstances impacting one partner, that school may make an argument to accept a modification of their initial bid (i.e. one partner from the original bid plus a new partner or a second team who also shows demonstrated success in the activity). 4. A schedule of alternates will be published on net-benefits. In the event a school turns down their bid we will seek to fill the round robin by: a. First inviting alternates b. Second, opening to a secondary bid process c. Third, inviting highly qualified/ranked regional teams under the rationale they will incur less cost to attend d. Fourth, inviting bids from schools already attending the round robin e. Fifth, filling out the pool with teams from UPS 5. We plan to have each preliminary round double judged. 6. Each team is required to bring one judge. 7. UPS will hire extra judging in order to give coaches/judges rounds off, diversify the judge pool, and cover any uncovered judging. 8. We will supply food and amenities to all attending the tournament. Entry fees will cover the two debaters and one judge for food. You will be asked to pay a fee for any observers or extra coaching staff you bring. Depending on the final schedule we will have a banquet for all attending. In past years the banquet has been Thai/Vietnamese and contemporary Tex-Mex. 9. Teams with low funds may request assistance with travel (plane and ground transportation), lodging, and tournament fees. Please do so immediately in writing to dbuescher@pugetsound.edu. Any assistance may also be applied to entry into the regular tournament. 10. Bid Applications should include the following information: a. General Information i. School/Institution ii. Director’s Name iii. Director’s office and cell phone numbers iv. Director’s email address v. Additional Coaches Names and Contact numbers vi. Coaches email addresses vii. First and last names of debaters applying for the bid. viii. Name and contact numbers (if not already listed) of judge b. Statement of Intent: “School name” submits a bid on behalf of Debater 1 and Debater 2 to compete in the Puget Sound Round Robin tournament October 2009. We will come to the Round Robin and bring at least one experienced judge/critic/educator if accepted. c. List of accomplishments warranting the bid i. Tournament honors (places and total number of teams at the tournament if available; speaker awards, etc.), ii. Any additional information—student leader in developing on campus debates, etc. UPS looks forward to hosting our 3rd Annual Round Robin. Please consider joining us in the beautiful Northwest. |

two items
1. round robin bids are due tomorrow--friday, september 4th 2. we might be experiencing some room issues. it turns out the board of trustees is meeting on campus that weekend instead of their normal meeting place in seattle. this may impact the ie tournament and adjust the location of the round robin. we'll work out what we can as best we can. derek |

The bids are on there way. Like Wyoming, we have an excellent group of teams that have applied, but we have not met our invite number. I have emailed directors with bids to solicit input on how to proceed. I am close to having enough input to move forward and will then announce bids.

Also,
do to timing, logistics, and support we will not be having ies. This will lead to some softening of the schedule. We are likely to add a Saturday am 5k run before rounds and then extend lunch break to include pick-up ultimate, touch football, and b-ball. Sorry about the ies. |
