Joe McAdoo & Alumni Debate Tournaments @ Drury University
Joe McAdoo & Alumni Debate Tournaments @ Drury University
December, 2009 On behalf of Drury University, we invite you to attend the 1st Annual Joe McAdoo & Alumni (NO FEE) Debate Tournament Weekend February 12th-14th, 2010. Our concept is simple: 2 FREE parli debate tournaments in 3 days, Friday-Sunday. This is an OPEN parli debate tournament weekend and entries are free as long as you bring judges. Our goal: a FREE regional and national preparation for competitive parli debate teams. Topic areas will be announced in January. Entries are due by Friday, February 5th @ 5:00 p.m. Entries should be sent to Patrick Muenks by email (patrick.muenks@gmail.com) or cell (816-589-6500). We also think we have a fax machine...if you need that option. Entries should include a list of all open parli teams and judge-critics. We reserve the right to limit entries if judges are not provided. Drury University is located in the “Queen City” of Springfield, MO 2.5 hours south of Kansas City, 3 hours southwest of St. Louis & .5 hours from lovely Branson, MO. We are served by a larger (and VERY NEW) regional airport in town, and a smaller (also new) airport near Branson, MO. Springfield provides a wealth of quality restaurants, hotels, and night life venues. We look forward to hosting you in February! Sincerely, Curt Gilstrap Director of Debate Patrick Muenks Debate Coach & GA Allyson Strickland Debate Team Captain Parliamentary Debate Six preliminary rounds and an appropriate number of elimination rounds will be offered in each parliamentary debate tournament. We will adhere to NPDA rules with the exception that we will use a 40 minute prep period for the first two rounds of each tournament (and the first two rounds will also share a topic and teams will “flip” sides on the topic), a 20 minute prep period for all other rounds, and topic areas will be released prior to the tournament weekend. We will have central topic announcement in Shewmaker Hall, a location central to the buildings we will be using. There will be no Fees our inaugural year! Uncovered teams will receive a frownie face. If you cannot cover all of your teams, let us know early and we will help you find a local judge to hire. (Patrick accepts gifts cards for this service btw!) We suggest you pay judges $200 for a full weekend commitment, but you are certainly welcome to negotiate fees using legal means. One judge covers two teams. Judges are committed to judging a round past their team’s elimination from the tournament….though we ask everyone to be considerate and judge as much as possible since we are providing things for free…and since this is an important time in the competitive season for team prep. Awards We plan to do something cool. Awards will be given to finalists, top speakers, and top schools in sweepstakes. We will recognize top achievers in all of these areas as well. Sweeps points: These are earned through wins. Teams earn 1 point for prelim wins & 2 points for elim wins. Every team counts toward sweeps entries. Wireless We will have wireless internet access available. Instructions for logging on to the network will be provided at registration. Drury Tournament Weekend Schedule (The Friday start time will not change, though the weekend schedule may be lightly amended as we adjust for fluctuations in size and room availability.) Here is a decent option: Ramada Oasis Hotel & Convention Center 2546 N. Glenstone Springfield, MO 65803 $71.00 plus tax (single or double occupancy) Rate includes full hot breakfast buffet http://www.ramadaoasis.com/directions.php Missy Handyside is our contact there! There are MANY very cheap m/hotels in town too. Additionally, we don’t mind asking local alums if they can host small teams. Just let us know if this is a necessity and we will do our best to help you find lodging! Parking Parking will be available in the Shewmaker Hall Parking lot each day of the tournament. This lot lies behind and next to the old Washington Street Baptist Church (Drury’s current Diversity Center) and to the south of Shewmaker Hall. Oh, and it’s free. Food We have a Subway within walking distance, cheap/decent food on campus, and plenty of cheap/decent options within a 2-5 minute drive. Food is not free, yet. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Patrick at patrick.muenks@gmail.com !! Last edited by TheDifferend : 02-11-10 at 08:04 AM. |

Bump. We have heard there's interest from a good handful of schools. This is a perfect setting and a great time of the semester to be finalizing npte points.
We plan to have our topic areas announced by early next week. Hope y'all can make it! CG

Two questions:
1) Is there a team and judge list? 2) Is there strikes/MPJ? |

Update
After a couple of late adds, Patrick is finalizing the team list. We are working through our judges now to cover a few teams who need them. Most of our alums are very decent critics...and local NDT critics may also join us.
Once everything is finalized, we will post both of these things (teams list probably Tuesday...judges Tuesday or Wednesday). Because this is not a monster tournament, we are not offering prefs. We plan to do this in 2011 and after. We will, though, provide detailed information on all judges to the best of our ability. Additionally, there will be a warm wall. It's looking like we'll be able to keep most of our rounds in Shewmaker Hall and the TSC. A few Friday rounds will take place in adjacent buildings (due to classes), but we're pretty compact...so no crazy walks. Also, plan on some cold precip. as we've had a fairly cold and wet winter here...and Friday could see a little more of it (not a lot, we're told). There are no parking pass issues, so park in the Shewmaker lot and check in in the Shewmaker Lobby. We'll have the trophies out..and the judges' table there. Additionally, we'll have some information regarding campus, food, warm wall, etc. CG

We will be providing a pizza dinner on Friday evening right after 4th round.
FYI. To do this, we cut back on the outlandish final trophy for tourney 2, though the trophies for top speaker and the winner of tourney 1 will still receive nice, shiny, big trophies. The winner of tourney 2 will still receive a trophy...just not as shiny and big. ;]

Friday rooms will mostly be in Shewmaker Hall. We will only use the TSC for the first 3 rounds. The rest of Friday, Saturday & Sunday will ONLY be in Shewmaker Hall....unless craziness ensues.
Should be cozy! CG

Cool cup trophies for top teams and top speaker. Cool wooden puzzles for other awards. Top teams' coaches will receive either bubbly or wine. Just sayin'.
Glorious day.

Wow, this is tight. 45 minutes to do the mechanics of the debate, then a grand total of 5 minutes to get out of the round, have the judge write a ballot, and be back for topic announce?
I will be eager to hear if this is possible...

round 1 and 2 used the same topic, judges probably picked up both ballots, and there are only eight rounds going on. probably still tight, but probably manageable.
