Yale InterVarsity Tournament

The Yale IV
October 24-25, 2008

The Yale Debate Association invites you to participate in the third annual Yale Inter-Varsity Parliamentary Tournament, to take place at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut on Friday, October 24 and Saturday, October 25.

The Tournament

The tournament will consist of five preliminary rounds (the first four of which will have open adjudication), followed by a varsity quarters break* and a novice** final round. All rounds will be debated in the British Parliamentary style. We promise high quality judging with useful feedback in the open adjudication rounds. This will be an excellent opportunity for teams to prepare for Worlds.

We are pleased to announce that Andrew Rohrbach will be our Chief Adjudicator. Tess Reed and Mark Longhurst will serve as Co-Conveners.

Registration

To register, fill in the form at http://yaledebate.org/iv/reg.html. The deadline for registration is midnight, Tuesday, 21 October 2008.

Payment

Registration will be $125/Team for US schools and $75/team for international schools. We will require payment upon registration as a prerequisite for participation in the tournament.

Parking

General note about parking: The lots listed below will be open to public parking after 4pm on Friday and all weekend. Until 4pm, we recommend you find metered parking on the street, which is available virtually everywhere on Yale campus. All parking directions below are given from High Street.

Lot 51-
This lot is the most strongly recommended by the Yale Parking Office, due to its proximity to campus and the security of the surrounding area. Starting on High Street, drive North to Elm Street (Elm is only half a block from the High Street Gate. High Street dead ends into a pedestrian walkway). Turn right on Elm. Drive one block to College Street. Turn left on College Street. After one block, turn right on Wall Street. After another block, turn right on Temple. The parking lot will be on your right in half a block.

Lot 78-
This lot is the least likely to be crowded, but the Parking Office recommends that you not park there unaccompanied after dark. Again starting on High St, drive north half a block to Elm. Turn right on Elm. After one block, turn left on College Street. After two blocks, turn left on Grove Street. At the first stoplight, turn right on Ashmun Street. The parking lot will be on your left after a half block.

Lot 23 and 22-
Starting on High Street, drive North half a block to Elm Street. Turn right on Elm. After three blocks, turn left on Church Street. Keep driving until Church becomes Whitney (at first stop light). Continue on Whitney for several blocks. After Trumbull Street, Lot 23 will be on your right at 158 Whitney. After Sachem Street, Lot 22 will be on your left.

Train

There is hourly Metro-North service to New Haven from Grand Central Terminal in New York seven days a week. Click on the link for schedule information. Amtrak offers daily service to New Haven from Boston, Philadelphia, New York, and many other cities. Call (800)USA-RAIL or go to the Amtrak website for more information. Taxi service is available from the train station and costs approximately $6. Ask to be dropped off at Phelps Gate.

Air

Tweed-New Haven Airport is located 4 miles from campus and offers taxi, car rental, and bus services. It is served by two express airlines: Delta and USAir. However, service is limited. Yale is also accessible from 4 major national airports. The closest airport to campus is Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT, just outside of Hartford. LaGuardia Airport, JFK International Airport, and Newark International Airport are also viable options. All four provide many rental car options. Additionally, Connecticut Limo offers frequent taxi/limo service to and from all four aiports. Call (800)320-7298 for information. Fitzgerald Airport Express (800-468-7287) and Prime Time Shuttle of CT (800-RED-VANS) also provide service to and from Bradley.

The members of the Yale Debate Association are looking forward to welcoming you to Yale for a great weekend of debate. We hope to see you there!

Warmest regards,

Tess and Mark

*If registration is under 80 teams, we will break straight to semifinals.
