Net Benefits will be unavailable tonight (1/8/06) starting at approximately 6:00 central time. The purpose of this outage is to allow us to migrate the database to a new server. Migration of the website itself to the new server will happen later, but should be transparent to the user.

Although I expect the transition to take approximately 30-40 minutes, plan for the site to be unavailable for up to an hour and a half. Please direct all questions to tutakai.

We're back online after a little bit more than 1/2 hour. Please contact either tutakai or myself if you experience difficulties.

That was fast thanks.

Does this server support actually having the correct time?

It's fine to be off GMT, 'cause you can adjust to your time zone - but it's not correctly set off GMT. It's 32 minutes (or so) behind.

Yes and no. I believe that the forum is set up to use GMT. Why this is, I don't know, but I don't have a dog in that fight.

You should, however, notice an improvement because the new machine is configured to update its time over the 'net, whereas the old one was configured to update its time only when enough people complained and I was motivated to fix it. So it will probably continue to display in GMT, but it should be more true to that than before.

Cheers

Sort of a dumb question. Who owns Net-Benefits? Who pays for it? Can I find out everyone who has administrator powers or more? It's not a terribly pressing matter, but I wonder because when you say "us," I don't know who that is. You and Jed? You and the people who let you host it?

That is a good question. Up until this point, Jed has been paying for it out of his vast profits from db8wear. Jed's name is on the domain name, and he bought the vBulletin license. So I would say that makes him the owner.

I just own and run the hardware, so I don't consider myself to have any ownership interest in net benefits itself - I consider Jed and/or the site to be a customer. But when I say 'us,' I mean me, myself, I, and the other 3 guys who share the 1/2 rack of cabinet space at the datacenter (www.fntspower.com).

Awesome, so if something goes down, I'll just sue Jed. :)

Just curious about the admins. Anyone besides Patrick, Ian, Amy, you, Adam, Jed?

Actually, I don't think I'm even an admin. Maybe I am in the sense that I can cause some serious damage if I screw something up, but within the context of NB, I am just a guy who posts when I am going to break something, or when I have nothing better to do in tab at the NPTE.

As for the possible lawsuits against Jed, it is true that in Nebraska, $101.50 gets you a lawsuit, but I always thought they were a heckofalot better if they have a recognized theory of liability to back them up. The way I see it, the fun happens after you defeat the 12b6. :D
