I hate to be narcissistic and take up a new topic with this, but I didn't know where to put it since we don't have a "what are you doing after you graduate" thread anymore....and so many of you were so nice and asking me about it....
I just got into Teach for America! I'm going to be spending the next 2 years of my life in Houston, TX, teaching ESL. I am very excited and very nervous. I have never even BEEN to Texas (except a layover in Dallas/Ft Worth when I went to New York in 1994) so I hope the debate community will help me get acclimated! I will NOT however, be becoming an Cowboys, Texans, Astros, Rangers, Rockets, or Mavericks fan. Maybe the Comets though :)

Congratulations, Andrea! I am very proud of you, but had no doubt that you would get in. It is an exceptional program and you are an exceptional human being.
You will be perhaps the most thoughtful, caring, and intelligent teacher these students ever have. In return, you will have one of the most rewarding experiences of your life (and maybe get a chance to improve your Spanish).
Love,

YEA!!! You'll be fantastic.
I'm sure you'll find teaching exhausting, but I hope you also find it equally rewarding.
Good luck,
Patty
ps, Dan West from Rice Univeristy in Houston is a great guy. If you are interested in doing some judging on the weekends give him a call or e-mail to introduce yourself and to let him know you are available.

Thanks for the encouragement, y'al (see, I'm practicing)l. I appreciate the offer, Sam but unfortunately I am drug-free...(I know, what a rarity among debaters) I'll take a drink though... :)
I would love any Texas tips anyone has....

Congratulations Andrea!! When do you leave? I have some Texas tips for you.
You don't need big hair to fit in.
Its humid so no polyester.
There are big bugs there -- you may want to invest in industrial pesticides despite all the hype.
They drive on the left side of the road.
Refer to Texas as if it were still an independent republic -- I bet you'll fall in with an interesting crowd.
Make sure you come back too....we need you around.
send me an email sometime
