Anyone have any ideas at all? Here's another copy of what Jed posted . . . (By the way, howdy, y'all. Is everyone around yet?)

THE FIRST IMMUNITY CHALLENGE

In exactly 1 week, each team will be required to vote off one of their members with one exception. The winner of the Immunity Challenge will be protected from the vote and all members will survive to the next round. In the event of a tie-vote, a run-off will be held.

The first immunity challenge is easy. Each Tribe must come up with a Name and a Logo. Each tribe may submit only one Name/Logo combination for voting.

Once the deadline is up, I will post each Name/Logo at an undisclosed graphics ezBoard where I will ask that it be rated. The Tribe with the best rating will be immune from the first Tribal Council.

Artwork does not need to be the work of Tribe members which means you can illicit the service of friends (or enemies) to design it for you. I suggest that each Tribe sets up a thread for itself to arrange the setup and decide which logo to use. The logo must be 250 pixels wide by 125 pixels high. Logos can be emailed to me for image hosting if you don't have servers space of your own.

Good luck to all the tribes. Let the games begin.

hey, i persoanlly suck at these designing thingys, but i know some people who are REALLY good at computer graphics. (like, they do it for a living.)

So, i'll bug them about it and get back to you. :)

I think a good team name would have to be obnoxious but at the same time still retain elements of cuteness. How about 'The Marauding Beavers'?

Seriously, though, if that doesn't work then emulating the 'Godfather' motif is also a sure fire winner. We did it for our team sweatshirts and it was a huge success. We can have a black background with the little hand holding the puppet strings and everything! The logo looks professionally done, too. We could call ourselves the Net Benefits Mafia or something (the original impetus for our shirts was this detective card game called 'mafia' that I learned in New England as a child and introduced to the team).

I'll retrieve the art tommorow and post it. I think you guys will like it. Meanwhile, does anyone else have any ideas?

Also, post your e-mail address. Mine is samopolis@yahoo.com And where is everyone geographically? I'm in Lafayette, California (near San Francisco)...Zach, Dre, Brian, Rob, Kurtis whereabouts are you?

Take it easy,

I'm presently in Salem, Oregon (but born in Lakers territory and grew up in Kings territory, making life in my family a bit complicated these days.) I agree we definitely need some creative input from Dre. She's bound to have something poetic up her sleeve.

Although Kurtis (Reid) won't get this, when I think of the computer graphics potential of Jed's NB survivor game crashing head on into the NPDA community, what comes to mind is Jed's $100 bill picture, with Ben Franklin's image replaced by the head of Al Johnson or Robert Trapp. Either seems like an apt founding father, mascot, or godfather for that matter. :) Just some silliness. :)

yup, i dont get it. :)

And my friends have expressed interest in helping me with their designs, so we might wanna decide on a name. And i'm in washington.

OK, I'm finally here.

I appreciate everyone's trust in me but I am a mediocre poet, not an artist. I will write us a theme song when we get a name, no problem, but I can barely draw a circle.
I like the idea of something with the Mafia, or ninjas- I just like the word ninja, plus you know, "ninja debaters." (Do we have a non-debater here?)
Are we all West Coast? Oh, not Rob..dammit. Anyway, I want to see the Godfather art. Sound cool..even Puffy (oops, P.Diddy) and crew call themselves "The Family..." If not, I'm telling you guys. Ninjas.

Dre

p.s. Sam, Mafia is like the official game of the Willamette camp...well, it was the last 2 years when Arun Skaria of Florida was there, he never let anyone else be the moderator either...you should take it over.

Dre's right that there is a kind of special significance to the whole "mafia" thing in the debate world--at least in the world of Willamette campers, of which all of us but Sam and Kurtis here been a part recently I believe. I'm digging the ninja thing. Perhaps we could combine the two and go with "Ninja Mafia"? Sounds novel and highly intimidating to me? Surely we could find some way to manipulate the Godfather art appropriately?

-Brian

P.S. Yeah, Rob ruins the West Coast connection (although, we haven't seen him around NB for a while). And, Kurtis isn't a debater I don't think; although, I'm sure Phil will recruit him heavily when he starts at Western Washington in the Fall. :) Any other commonalities, other than our all liking to think of ourselves as ninjas?

oh yeah, my email is dr_andrea@yahoo.com, but I think you can get most of them (not Rob) off the email Jed sent about the challenge.

Here are the admittedly rough and very novice beginnings of a back up, I'm playing around with for procrastination-from-school-work-sake in case we don't come up with anything better. (By the way, my e-mail address is shipleyb@bulldog.georgetown.edu)

 Actually, I think "undead" is a way cool word! I kind of like "conqueror," too. Not so much in the Columbus/1492 sense, as in the Phil Sharp is going down sense, of course.

You know we could probably have a long scary name that more aptly reflects our tribe and also use "The Ninja Mafia" or something else for short? Hey, I know were running out of time, but can we make the long version an acronym for creativity points? Not that N and M go very well together in any cool word, I've found as I've been thinking about it. At this point I'm leaning toward, Dre's latest suggestion, whether she meant it or not. :) Wow, how did we get so vicious?

Kurtis, stick with simple. Something with ninja and mafia seems to be not objectionable to folks. Anything else really isn't necessary. Andrea and I didn't mean, I'm sure, to keep making things more difficult by seeming to change the story. We'll just work in other vicious and scary words into the description that goes along with it if we want. It seems more important that we just get it done. It's all pretty silly anyway. So no big deal. And, definitely don't feel any undue "pressure" from that other thread. If anyone disagrees, say so, but this'll hopefully let Kurtis help us get done. :) :)

ALright, guys....sorry I haven't been around. I'm livin' in Chicago for the next couple of weeks...then off to Maine.

I suggest The Toothless Three-Quarters Naked Scotspeople....

Can't be Scotsmen...have to be politically correct here...

DreinCali
05-25-02, 05:12 PM
heehee..can you imagine if we were both naked and undead..yuck...

give me a couple hours, I'm good at acronyms and I'll let you know if anything using real English words is possible.

DreinCali
05-25-02, 05:53 PM
Also, I can not understand why Brian says there aren't any cool words that have the letters N and M in them. Tell me these aren't cool words: muffin, minnow, chimney, anemia, cornmeal, Myanmar, money, alumni, autumn, Denmark, insomniac, unmarried, "Rain Man," comedian, midnight, Tienanmen, hymnal, gymnastics, and for 5 bonus points, Houyhnhnms (anyone know what that is?)

OK, so maybe those aren't really scary words- how about damn, inmate, condemn, enemy, gunmen, omen, mania, enema?...some long, but we're creative.

Oooh! I almost forgot! "Minivan"! It stands for...Mafia of Interstellar Naked Intellectual Vicious Automotive Ninjas!

Having fun,

Well, Dre, I had thought of a few of those--in fact, I worked with "D.A.M.N." for a while and came up with "Deabter-Annihilating Mafia of Ninjas." Although, "M.I.N.I.V.A.N." is pretty "DAMN" cool. My real struggle was coming up with a word that placed N before M, though I agree that that really isn't necessary if you ignore the "o" in "of." :p What an awesomely substantive and important discussion we're having!

From now on, though, my issue with you Andrea, will be the performative links you just gave me to a stigmatization of mentally ill persons Kritik by including the clinical psychiatric diagnosis of "mania" in a list of words intended to be "scary," associating it with words suggesting criminalization like "inmate," associating it with words suggesting violence like "gunmen," and also just generally including it in the same list of trivial acronym fodder such as words like "enema." Hmmm. ;)

-Brian :)

DreinCali
05-25-02, 07:28 PM
I meant to type "maniac," but even so, my dictionary says mania is also "extreme enthusiam for something", so damn (or DAMN, I love it) your kritik, Brian!

I suggest we be:

the INMATEs - the interstellar ninja mafia of alcoholic totalitarian evil

or

the OMENs- the original mafia of extraterrestrial ninjas

to play along at home: replace interstellar with intercollegiate or insurgent; alcoholic with award-winning, American, angry, alien, or amoral; totalitarian with Teamster, temperamental, or troublemaking; evil/extraterrestrial interchangeably or replaced with executioners or extortionists; original with obnoxious, obsessive, offensive, or overbearing.

WHY am I obsessed with aliens all of a sudden? 0]

just 2 possibilities, but for either you could substitute the names (without p.e.r.i.o.d.s.) into the Godfather w/ninja eyes graphic and it would sort of make sense...

Brian, you better not get any Nationals resolutions ideas from this thread!!

OK, Sam's totally right. As much fun as Andrea and I are having revelling in brainstorming mode, we need to be done. So, below is where I'm at with the graphic we have actually seen. It also proposes an alternative way to work in an acronym and fill in the extra space. Any other ideas on name or graphic? Seriously.

I will check in frequently throughout the day Monday. Otherwise I'll be online anyway doing schoolwork. I guess we have until Midnight. So, everyone please either give some input or sign off on what we've got.

By the way, my alternative acronym was "Nauseously (or Neomodernly) Irreverent Neighborhood of Jed’s Apostles." It'll be easy to make any changes to it if anyone has any ideas.

If you've come up with something from your buddies, Kurtis, let's see it. What I've got is totally a back up if you've got something better. Also, I know the throwing star in the "puppetmaster's" hand is kinda sketchy. I keep messing with it, but if y'all think it's too messed up, let me know and I'll give up and put it back to the cross. Or Sam, give it a go. Just trying to get us something. . .

and don't forget to add in the explanation either of the two debate connections- ninja debating, or Mafia, the official card party game of debaters. ;)

Wish you guys could have seen some of those Willamette games...The last of the week, where Mafia Danny Barak and Bill Herman outsmarted us all to clinch victory was classic- as was moderator Arun Skaria's repeated outcry, "Mafia win! National champions f***d you guys in the a**!" (I later suggested he not make that joke right in front of Jeff Edwards, but later retracted it as Jeff seemed amused.)
