The Louisiana Intercollegiate Forensics Association, Louisiana Eta Chapter of Pi Kappa Delta and the McNeese Department of Speech and Theatre Arts invite you to enjoy warm temperatures along with excellent competitive and educational forensic opportunities at the Annual Louisiana Intercollegiate Forensic Association Championship Tournament. This is an OPEN tournament and LIFA invites all schools to attend during this festive weekend in Southwest Louisiana.
The LIFA Championships will feature all eleven AFA-NIET individual events, divisions of parliamentary debate and IPDA, as well as countless awards and tons o’ fun!
An efficient tournament is virtually guaranteed as our good friends Jeff Hobbs (UT-Tyler) Tom Huebner (William Carey) and Trey Gibson (LA. Tech) head the debate tab room and Robert Markstrom (McNeese) and Jorgi Jarzabek (LSU-S) head the individual events tab room. Additionally, we offer several special features:
*The food is great! The temperatures are fantastic! It’s a great way to find
warmth in the cold of February.
*Who says there is no such thing as a free lunch!? We will provide
a free lunch on Saturday.
*A friendly tournament schedule to allow you the opportunity to enjoy
Mardi Gras and all the festivities on the Boardwalk.
*Full opportunities for students who wish to compete in both debate (IPDA
and NPDA) and individual events (in AFA patterns).

NOTES
Only students with eligibility remaining will be allowed to participate in the tournaments.
Open divisions in all eleven AFA-NIET events will be offered in two flights and two rounds. All AFA rules and time limits will be used in each event.
No presentation should be composed of material used by the student prior to September 1, 2001. Likewise, no student may use a selection or cutting in more than one event. As outlined in AFA guidelines for performance of literature, only one original selection may be used in program of oral interpretation.
Flight A: Impromptu, Informative, Prose, DI, CA
Flight B: Duo, Ext, Persuasive, POI, Poetry, ADS
Extemporaneous Speaking Topics
All rounds will feature questions from either socio-domestic, economic, or international arenas.
Breaking Brackets
Brackets will not be broken in individual events semi-finals or debate elimination rounds.
Host Entries
McNeese will enter students in the tournament. This is the Louisiana State Tournament run by the state organization but hosted on the McNeese State Campus. There will be no restrictions on their entries.
Schedule Justification
The state organization must have all debate finals and competition completed prior to holding the Awards ceremony. We have to award Louisiana State Championship trophies and cant do so until we know the winners! There are also a lot of events in the city to enjoy on Saturday. We intentionally hosted during this weekend so that schools can enjoy competition and the culture of SWLA.

Parliamentary Debate
NPDA Nationals does not forbid debaters from reading materials or talking to coaches during prep. time. The social norm in this area is to allow the debaters to only look up terms. Since this tournament is not the National tournament, debaters should be encouraged to develop their argumentation on their own. This means that debaters will be allowed to look up terms during prep., but should avoid accessing files or seeking outside assistance during prep. Time limits will be 7-8-8-8 with 4-5 rebuttals.
Transportation
In the instance that schools are interested in flying, the Lake Charles Airport services Continental Express. Schools might also look into renting vehicles and flying into Houston (2-2.5 hours away), Baton Rouge (2 hours away), or Lafayette (1 hour away). McNeese is happy to provide complimentary transportation to schools flying into Lake Charles.
Tournament Hotel
The tournament hotel will be the Microtel. The tournament rate will be $52.00. Call (31:cool: 527-1000 for reservations. This block of rooms will be released on January 1, 2001. Please reference McNeese Speech and Debate. If you have any problems please ask for Eva. The Hotel is located in Sulphur, LA just over the Bridge exit 20. It is the Ruth Street Exit. Rooms are blocked Thursday through Saturday at that rate.
Tournament Formulas
The following sweepstakes formula will be used during the tournaments:
IE Points will be determined by the following formula:
Prelim. Rankings 1 = 3 points Finalist: 1st = 6 points
2 = 2 points 2nd = 5 points
3 = 1 points 3rd = 4 points
Semi-finalists earn 2 point for 4th = 3 points
Nonadvancing contestants 5th = 2 points
others = 1 point
Debate points will be determined by the following formula:
5 points for each Prelim. win
6 points for breaking to elim rounds
6 pts for 1st speaker
5pts for 2nd speaker
4 pts for 3rd speaker
3 pts for 4th speaker
2 pts for 5th speaker
Only the top 5 entries in an event earn team sweepstakes points.

Parliamentary Teams $40.00 Uncovered IE Entries $8.00
IPDA Entries $20.00 LIFA FEES all schools $25.00
Uncovered Team Debate Entries $70.00

All drops occurring after Wednesday night will be charged twice the amount of the original entry.
One debate judge covers two debate teams/four IPDA entries. One individual event judge covers six entries per conflict pattern. As with most tournaments, we would be much more pleased with your judges than your money. The tournament hosts reserve the right to turn away any schools with large entries and minimal/no judges to cover the entry. Contact us early should you have a need to hire several judges!
Awards
1. All finalists in individual events will receive awards. (Two awards will be awarded per duo team.)
2. Top Novice awards will be given to the top novice in each individual event.
3. Top three in pentathalon will receive awards (must have an interp., PA, and a limited prep).
4. Each member of a Parliamentary team will receive awards for elimination rounds.
5. Top five speaker awards will be given for all divisions of team debate.
6. Top three sweepstakes awards will be given for Individual Events Sweepstakes, Debate Sweepstakes,
and Overall Sweepstakes (must have done I.E.’s and debate).

Given the early Friday start, your entry MUST be in our hands no later than 5:00 Tuesday, February 5, Fees will be assessed as of 12:00 noon Wednesday, February 6th.
