International High School Debate Auditions

Claremont McKenna College, through its Debate Union and high school debate outreach program – the High School Public Debate Program (HSPDP) – has been selected by the World Schools Debating Council as the official US representative to recruit, select, and train high school students for international debate competitions in its format. This includes the World Championship, Pan American Championship, Pacific Rim Championship and other regional and national tournaments, as well as debate exchanges. More than 60 countries have participated in the WSDC international competitions.

National auditions are now underway to select representatives for US teams. Initial selection is for the 2009 Pan American Championship (August 2009, Canada) and the 2010 World Schools Debating Championship (February 2010, Qatar). Auditions are scheduled for the following sites and dates:

Atlanta, May 2
Kansas City, May 9
Boston, May 16
Washington, DC, May 17
San Francisco, June 6
Los Angeles, June 29

The WSDC format involves 3-person teams arguing on extemporaneous (pre-announced, several weeks prior to an event) and impromptu (one-hour preparation time) topics. Information on the format is available at http://www.schoolsdebate.com. Applicant information and application forms are available at http://parliamentarydebate.com. Application forms are due 2 weeks prior to an audition.

The US teams are organized by John Meany and coached by John Meany and Kate Shuster. Please contact John Meany (prefer email, due to travel) with questions about WSDC debating or the national auditions.
