Purdue University Boilermaker Special Tournament
August, 2002
Dear Forensics Community:
We are proud to bring you the fifth annual Boilermaker Special Tournament. The tournament will be held at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana on Friday and Saturday, September 20-21, 2002. As in years past, the Boilermaker will be a two-day tournament offering competition in all 11 AFA events and NPDA parliamentary debate. Novice categories will be held where available (possibilities include Prose, Poetry, Extemp, Impromptu, and maybe even Parli!). Students may enter up to three events per flight. Schools may enter up to six students per event. Please bring as many judges as possible. Awards will be given to all finalists, a Quadrathon winner, top novices in each event, the top three schools participating in IEs only and the top three schools participating in Parli only. As well, we will have an OVERALL AWARD for the top three schools participating in both IEs and Parli.
The entry deadline is afternoon to evening-ish but not after 8pm on Tuesday, September 17, 2002. Entries may be called into Kate Brandon at her office (765-494-3429) from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the Tuesday before the tournament weekend. In addition, you may fax your entry to the Purdue Department of Communication (765-496-1394). However, the best way to submit entries is by emailing Kate at kbrando@purdue.edu Be sure we receive submittals by the entry deadline of 8pm! If you fax your entry, please do so before 5pm and attach an email address or phone number so that we can confirm receipt of your entry. Include a cover page with “Boilermaker Special” listed as the receiver. This will greatly increase the chance of your entry reaching us in time.
We hope the Purdue Boilermaker Special Tournament will provide you a friendly, challenging, and educationally profitable tournament to kick off your year. We hope you enjoy West Lafayette/Lafayette as much as we do and we look forward to seeing you soon! Please let us know if we can be of any assistance in the meantime.

Entries: A school may enter six students per IE event. A student may only enter a maximum of three IE events per grouping. All students can enter parli! Students ARE ENTIRELY RESPONSIBLE for getting to all their events in the allotted time period. Two duos count as two events. BE ADVISED: JUDGES WILL BE LEAVING ROOMS WHEN ROUNDS ARE SCHEDULED TO END. The tournament heavily recommends students not take on too many events.
Flight A:        Extemp, Prose, Informative, DI, Rhetorical Criticism, POI
Flight B:        Impromptu, Persuasion, Poetry, Duo, After-Dinner Speaking
We will create novice sections of an event if entries warrant. We will send a note out prior to the first day of the tournament to inform the forensics community of the likelihood of novice sections making. The tournament will follow AFA rules for IEs and NPDA rules for Parli. Any student entered in any 4 IE events will be considered entered in Quadrathon. Novices must be first year forensics competitors “on the whole” in either IE’s or Parli. That is, if students have competed in any IE’s prior to this year, they will not be considered a novice in only one or two of the 11 IE events. However, if students are vets in IEs but not Parli or Parli but not IEs, they may be listed as novice in the other forensics genre. For example, a 3rd year Parli person never having competed in IEs may be listed as a novice in IEs. A 4th year IE vet never having competed in Parli may be listed as a novice in debate. Please make sure you designate your novices at the time of your entry submission!
Judging: Schools are required to supply one judge for every six IE slots and one judge for every two Parli teams. All judges are expected to be knowledgeable of event rules. A limited number of hired judges are available at $10.00 per uncovered IE slot and $40.00 per uncovered Parli team. All judges should be available for her/his respective debate elim and/or IE final rounds. Debate critics are responsible for judging at least one round past the elimination of her/his school’s last debate team.
Fees: A fee of $7.00 will be assessed for each IE slot and a fee of $40.00 will be assessed for each Parli team. Drops made after September 18th will be assessed a drop fee of $10.00 per IE slot and $10.00 per Parli team. Drops at registration will be assessed a drop fee of $12.00 per IE slot and $25.00 per Parli team. Schools dropping judges after noon on September 19th will be assessed $30.00 as per any judge! DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR CRITICS!
Tournament Parking: With a parking pass, free parking is available in the parking garage on University Street or on the streets around LAEB. Please pick up your parking pass when you register and do not park in any restricted areas. Note: Passes are only needed for Friday.
Hotels:
Please be advised that hotels/motels are difficult to secure in this small (some say quaint) midwestern town! We have reserved rooms at several different establishments due to alums taking so many rooms for a local sporting event.
1) Rooms are held under Boilermaker Special Tournament
2) Make sure you reserve rooms before the cutoff dates as we are not in a position to renegotiate blocks after they’ve been released.

Directions: Purdue University is located in beautiful West Lafayette, Indiana. The Beering Liberal Arts and Education Building (LAEB/BRNG - where the tournament registration will be held) is a short distance off of State Street (State Route 26). From State Street turn onto University Street (you can only turn one way). LAEB is the second building on the right-hand side of the road. Park in the parking garage across the street from LAEB at the intersection of University and Second. Turn left on Second Street to get to the entrance to the parking garage. Registration will be in the lobby area of LAEB.
Purdue University in West Lafayette is not hard to find. Unfortunately, some routes may take you along smaller state roads (We’re thinking specifically of 43, 25, 26 and 231). Keep in mind that Lafayette is continually blessed with road construction along our main entrance to Purdue (State Road 26 / State Street). Plan for it. Please exercise caution in bad weather and leave yourself enough time to get here safely. After all, it’s only a tournament.
If you need further directions (or have tournament queries), please do not hesitate to call Kate & Amber at work (765-494-3429) or Kate at home (765-463-4224) or Amber on her cell (765- 532-9675). Feel free, as well, to email Kate at kbrando@purdue.edu or Amber at olivera@purdue.edu We will get back to you as quickly we possibly can. Hope to see you in September!
IMPORTANT EXTRA NOTE: LAEB is now entitled the Beering Liberal Arts and Education Building, or Beering Hall. Therefore you may find the BRNG designation rather than the LAEB designation on campus maps. Because of our history, we think it sound to retain the LAEB title for those of you who know the building as such. We hope this causes you no difficulty.
