Dear Forensics Colleagues:

On behalf of the LCSC Speech & Debate Team and the
Division of Humanities at Lewis-Clark State College, I
would like to invite you and your program to attend
the first annual LC Forensics Invitational, to be held
November 15-17 on the campus of Lewis-Clark State
College in Lewiston, Idaho. The tournament will serve
as a Northwest Forensics Conference designated
tournament. Despite the late announcement, we hope you
will still consider putting us on your schedule this
year. If not, we hope you will make plans to join us
next year!

Our full-service tournament will offer three rounds of
preliminary competition in all 11 AFA Individual
Events (Novice and Open in all events with a Junior
division in appropriate events) with appropriate
outrounds. Additionally, we will offer six preliminary
rounds of competition in three divisions (Novice,
Junior, and Open) of both parliamentary and policy
debate with appropriate outrounds. As dictated by NPDA
guidelines, we are announcing our inclusion of a warm
room for NPDA results (as allowed so as not to
interfere with tournament administration and
function).

You will find all pertinent information enclosed. For
your convenience, you WILL be able to make your
entries electronically via our website at
www.lcsc.edu/speech-debate. If you have any question,
concerns, or suggestions, please do not hesitate to
contact me. We’re looking forward to seeing you in
November!

Sincerely,

Bill Sheffield, Director of Forensics
LCSC Speech & Debate Team

Individual Events:
There will be three preliminary rounds competition in
all eleven AFA individual events. All events will have
a novice and open division; additionally, we will have
a junior division in the following events: Extemp,
Impromptu, and Prose. We reserve the right to collapse
divisions if necessary. AFA rules will govern all
events. In order to be eligible for the novice
division, students must be in their first year of I.E.
competition (both H.S. and college). Events will be
broken down into two conflict patterns:

A: Extemp, Prose, Duo, Informative, POI, CA
B: Impromptu, Poetry, Persuasive, ADS, DI

Students may not enter more than two events per
conflict pattern and are ultimately responsible for
making rounds within the allotted time period.
Students may compete in two duos with different
partners. Competitors may not use selections used in
competition prior to September 1, 2002.

Parliamentary Debate:
We will have six preliminary rounds of competition
with the appropriate number of elimination rounds to
follow. There will be three divisions (Novice, Junior
and Open). We will follow NPDA guidelines regarding
division eligibility. Teams will have 15 minutes to
prepare for each round following the announcement of
the topic. The first two rounds will be preset, with
each following round power-matched off preceding
rounds. Teams will advance to elimination rounds based
on the following criteria (in order): win-loss record,
dropping high/low points, total team speaker points,
and quality of competition (w/l record of opposing
teams). Brackets will be broken in the elimination
rounds.

Policy Debate:
We will have six preliminary rounds of competition on
the 2002-2003 CEDA topic, with appropriate elimination
rounds to follow. There will be three divisions
(Novice, Junior and Open). We do reserve the right to
collapse divisions as deemed necessary. We will follow
CEDA rules regarding division eligibility. Debates
will follow the 9-3-6 format with 10 minutes of prep
time. The first two rounds will be preset, with each
following round power-matched off preceding rounds.
Teams will advance to elimination rounds based on the
following criteria (in order): win-loss record,
dropping high/low points, total team speaker points,
and quality of competition (w/l record of opposing
teams). Brackets will be broken in the elimination
rounds. PLEASE NOTE THAT STUDENTS ENTERED IN POLICY
DEBATE MAY COMPETE ONLY IN PATTERN A OF INDIVIDUAL
EVENTS DUE TO A TIME CONFLICT WITH PATTERN B EVENTS.

NOTE: In accordance with NFC guidelines, LCSC students
are eligible to compete and win awards.

Judging:
Each debate critic covers 2 teams (or portion
thereof), while each individual events critic covers
up to 5 slots per pattern. As you might imagine, we
have an extreme shortage of judges in the LC Valley.
As such, we would rather have your judges than your
money! If you have judges who would be willing to
judge beyond their commitment, or have extra judges to
bring with you, please let me know ASAP. We reserve
the right to refuse uncovered entries if we do not
have a sufficient hired judge pool.

Sweepstakes:
The top ten speakers in each division of debate will
receive speaker awards. All elimination round
competitors in individual events will receive awards
and we will award two trophies to each team in duo. In
addition to individual awards, we will award
sweepstakes trophies for the (1) top three debate
schools, (2) top three IE schools, (3) top three
community colleges, and (4) top three overall schools.
The following formula will be used to calculate
sweepstakes points:

IE: (top 3 competitors per event per school)
1st – 10 points 2nd – 8 points 3rd – 6 points finalist
– 3 points semifinalist – 1 point

Team and Parliamentary Debate:
3 points for each preliminary round win (top 3 teams
in each division per event per school) plus 2 points
for each team that advances

$69.00 (plus tax) for rooms at this excellent facility
along the Snake River, just minutes from the LCSC
campus. Make sure to ask to book rooms under the "LC
Forensics Invitational" block; if you have any
problems, please ask for Harold Collins, the Guest
Services Manager. The hotel telephone number is (509)
758-9500 and their address is 700 Port Drive in
Clarkston. We hope you will take advantage of staying
at our tournament hotel; it will be the site of early
registration on Thursday evening as well as our
coaches reception on Saturday evening (where we will
be posting breaks for elimination rounds on Sunday).

Directions to the LC campus:
Exit the hotel and take a left onto Port Drive. Follow
Port Drive to the stop sign (the road will bend to the
right); continue through the stop sign and proceed to
the stop light (you'll be at the corner of 5th Street
and Bridge Street). Turn left at Bridge Street and
cross the blue bridge. Take an immediate right after
you cross the bridge; the road will split after you
turn. Take the road to the left, going up the hill to
Prospect Avenue. Continue on Prospect Avenue until you
get to 7th Avenue. Take a left on 7th Avenue and
proceed two blocks to 4th Street. Take a right on 4th
Street, and continue until you see a large parking lot
on your right. Park in this lot and proceed to the
Student Union Building (SUB) for registration and
postings. You are not required to have a parking pass
for the weekend. There is an additional lot at the
corner of 11th Avenue and 4th Street if you have
trouble finding a spot in the lots on 4th Street.
