> Dear Colleagues,
>
> The 2002-2003 school year marks Oregon State's 110th Anniversary of Forensics competition. We hope you'll join us to celebrate this milestone at the Earl Wells Memorial Speakeasy to be held February 21st-23rd on the beautiful Oregon State Campus.
>
> The competition will feature:
>
> ?        Six preliminary rounds of parliamentary debate with appropriate outrounds
> ?        Two preliminary rounds of the AFA events in AFA patterns
> ?        Two FUN events: the infamous Bad Interp and Impromptu Sales
> ?        A top notch tab room staff
> ?        A movie room for rounds off...including movies such as "The Sting" and "Johnny Dangerously"
> ?        The Spirit of the Roaring '20s...topics that reflect the time period
> ?        Costumes encouraged!
> ?        And much, much more!
>
> The tournament is named after Earl Wells who was the Director of Forensics at Oregon State during the 1920s. Hence, the second half of the name. Amazingly, Dr. Wells took students to debate in Europe way back then. So, in his honor and to celebrate 110 years of competition, we've changed from the Cheap and Easy to the Speakeasy. The competition's the same, the spirit is the same; just a new name. Please join us for the celebration!
>
> Sincerely,
> Trischa "Bootlegs" Goodnow, Director of Forensics

> We would rather have your judges than your money. Judges can be fairly scarce in Corvallis. So, be forewarned that if you don't bring judges, they'll be lots of lay judges who have degrees but they might be in biochemistry and who knows how they'll judge a debate! We'll train them, but who knows!
>
> We're also giving you the opportunity to support PSU for nationals. Any amount you add to your fees for PSU will be given directly to them. Think about the money you're saving by having nationals in Portland. The cost of hosting nationals is astronomical. So, we're giving you the opportunity to support PSU by adding an additional fee to your costs. Let's make sure we share the burden of hosting nationals in our region!
>
> Registration: Registration will be in Shepard Hall. You can get visitor's permits at the Visitor's Booth on 14th. After Friday at 6, you can park anywhere!
>
> Hotels:
> There is a swim meet in Corvallis that weekend, so rooms are a little tight. We do have some rooms set aside at the following hotels. If you're having problems, let me know and I'll see what I can do. Just mention the tournament.
> Econolodge - $50 for a room with two queen beds
> Ramada - $75 for double rooms, $59 for singles.
> Super 8 - Single $49 (Doubles are not available friday night but Saturday they will be. They are $56)
> None of these prices include tax.
>
> Events:
> The eleven standard AFA events with AFA rules in the following patterns:
> A: Impromtu, Informative, Prose
> B: Extemp, Duo, Persuasion, POI
> C: ADS, CA, DI, Poetry
>
> In addition, we'll have two fun events:
> Impromptu Sales - Speakers will have 7 minutes to divide between preparation and speaking. Competitors will be given an object to sell to the audience. The object need not be sold as what it is, i.e. a pen might be sold as a super sleek x-ray machine. Competitors should remember to maintain basic public speaking skills, i.e. organization. All competitors in a room will have the same object to sell. Impromptu Sales will be in Pattern C.
>
> Bad Interp - Speakers will attempt to satirize the conventions of oral interp as practiced in the forensics realm through the use of truly hideous, overused, or just plain trite material. The intent of the event is humor. *** Sidebar: Perhaps the best way to learn why you shouldn't do some things is to do it on purpose to see how silly it really is. There is education in humor. *** The time limit is 8 minutes. Bad Interp is in Pattern B.
>
> Parliamentary Debate: Parli will follow standard NPDA rules. However, there will be no warm room. Topics will be mass announced.
>
> This tournament will abide by the AFA Code of Ethics.
>
> Tentative Schedule:
> Hope to see you in Corvallis in February!
