View Full Version : Anon Posts
Can we change the policy of anon accounts? In think the premise for them is legitimate and well warranted, however I think their methodology for employment should be changed.
Those wishing to post "anonymously" should be encouraged to develop accounts of their own for that purpose that they register.
1. This cuts down on confusion on the use of differing persons on the same anonymous account.
2. It requires more effort for anonymous posts and as such, would likely diminish their usage for threat pollution - just like this post.

This post belongs in the discussion about site feedback. I've moved it there and left a redirect.

Well, at least Dancin' cannot be accused of using an anon account ....
They are just a spam tool.
It is hard to decide now which is worse.

Moderators have always removed spam and porn. I'm hoping someone will do that with all of these threads.

there are a ton of them that showed up today. I have been trying to fight them off but we will see.

I think people on this site have shown an inability to use annon accounts. They should be deleted, we are losing valuabel community members, and wasting moderator time because people aren't mature enought to post with them. They are valuable at times, but really this year has seen rampant abuse. Maybe we have to be mature enough to respect peoples oppinions when they put there names to them, or smart enought to create a gen account on our own.

I'd like to renew my suggestion that anon accounts be retained, but reviewed by a mod prior to posting. The trade-off for a slight delay in getting a post out there would be the DRASTICALLY reduced volume of horrible stuff we all are having to put up with.
This is a good idea (Debbie's), but unfortunately, I *think* that we'd have to upgrade the software to do it (I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it with our current package). So, $160.

Yeah, but...
I think the software is set up to do it, because every time I post I get a message about how if a moderator has elected to view all posts, it will be a little while. I'm thinking, though, that this is something Jed has to pull the master switch on (and we haven't heard from him in a little while).
Jed?
Edited to add: I just clicked on "Reply" and read the little message, which says that an administrator can elect to view all posts - perhaps this is why you're not seeing it as an option, Jake?
Ah, we can make it so EVERYONE'S posts have to be moderated. Or, we can make it so that every post in particular forum have to moderated. But, we can't make it so that only Corax & Tisias posts are moderated - at least I can't figure out how (and on the VB support page, it seems that you need the new version to do it).
Right now, the admins are discussing shutting down corax/tisias temporarily, and commencing a public discussion on whether that should be done permanently.
Either that or soliciting donations for a software upgrade ;).

Some of the moderators are - it's obviously been more of a problem over the last month.

I am torn becuase it is so easy to make a fake account but with the new rules it takes more time than simply using an ANON account. I have never posted with one (for I am unafraid) but I know that a few have done so because they fear reprisal for some reason. I say leave em up. We have had this talk for what 3 years now and they have been a good outlet for those that do not want to either A. get an account or B. that want to post without fear of reprisal.

I'm all for leaving the ability to post without fear of reprisals - I just don't think that the vast majority of the users ought to be held hostage to what is probably a very small number of truly abusive posters.
The problem is we're trying to measure competing goods here - the good of allowing for free expression, including about problems that might not get brought up otherwise, against the good of protecting the community from so much venom that it's driving folks away.
Bake sale, anyone?

I don't know what drove Matt away, and I haven't been on AIM at the same time that he has to ask him, but I don't know of any corax posts immediately prior to his leaving, nor has most of the recent vitrol been at the hands of corax.
