Parli Debates judged this year: 40
Non-Parli Debates judged this year: 60 - Worlds
Years Judging Debate: 9 years
Years Competed in Debate: 4 years
What School Competed at: Loyola Marymount University

Making Decisions: 'My decision is based soley (or as "soley" as a logical human being who is not a computer can muster)on how the debaters argue. I avoid using my own decision-making philosophy as much as possible. I have a lot of experience adjusting to a variety of styles strategies etc. and I am more than willing to do so. That being said know that I am a critical thinking professor who will reduce speaker points and ignore arguments that are not accompanied by some type of support/links etc. '

Decision-making Approach: 'If you want to make me happy drop all the T drama focus on what really matters and remember why we are here in the first place (FYI: The answer to the "why" part isn t "to leave with shiny plastic and hopefully hook up." Sorry.). When it comes to what I like to listen to I get excited by the introduction of strongly linked impacts (why oh why does famine always seem to "link" directly to nuke warfare?) and down-right giddy when debaters exhibit a strong knowledge of the topic rhetorically. '

Assessing Arguments: 'I vote on arguments that matter in the context of the round (at this level that should be nearly everything right?). If you drop one of those you are screwed. However a dropped argument doesn t necessarily equal a win for either team (feel free to make even lame dropped args a voter if it helps you sleep at night). '

Presentational Aspects: 'I will not drop you for forgetting your gender-neutral pronouns; hell it won t even affect your speaks (and this is coming from a feminist). However referring to me as Mr. Speaker may make me a tad uncomfortable (but hey it happens). If you spread (and I mean SPREAD not "talk kinda fast") I m cool but your speaks probably won t be. It s hard to be persuasive when you are busy hyperventilating yourself. Doesn t mean you ll lose though. I m still voting on arguments. I m supposed to comment on "public speaking-type" stuff here... Ok talk loud enough so that I can hear you I guess it would help if your eyes are open your poise should be um... well just have some and as far as hand gestures go... try not to give each other the finger. How s that? Honestly I don t care as long as your arguments are strong you have some rhetorical value etc. '

Strong Viewpoints: 'Hmmm... What debate coach/professor doesn t have strong view points??? Honestly as long as your logic is sound I m a happy camper regardless of what position you are running. Just for the fun of it though... I m a liberal with a baby on the way. Do with that what you will. '

Cases, DAs, CPs, Ks, T, etc.: 'My preference is that you don t suck. Do what you do best and you ll be fine. I d rather hear 3 amazing arguments than 7 undercovered crapfests. Make sure to tell me why your arguments are important (to your criteria/your impacts/etc.) '
