This is from the 2006 NPTE.
Matt Volz
Hired at the tournament but I coach for NAU
Parli Debates judged this year: 30
Non-Parli Debates judged this year: 8 LD rounds
Years Judging Debate: 2
Years Competed in Debate: 4
What School Competed at: NAU
Making Decisions: '--My decision is based solely on how the debaters argue I should decide; I avoid using my own decision-making philosophy as much as possible As much as I can I let the debaters decide whats important. I also think that some arguments are just more persuasive than others. ie. a comparison of human rights or the economy I seem to always choose human rights . '
Decision-making Approach: '--I focus on comparison (the government just needs to show their case is stronger than their opponents) This I guess describes me. I like debate to be about offense and strategy.'
Assessing Arguments: '--What do you like? Line by line argument versus Big picture/main issues argumentation I like to hear competing stories in a debate. '
Presentational Aspects: '-speed is fine; hopefully its for a good reason -neutral language; eh I guess this is imporatant especially if your opponents make arguments about it. -I don t care what other performative things happen in the round.'
Strong Viewpoints: 'no not really'
Cases, DAs, CPs, Ks, T, etc.: 't should be an argument about ground. res or fact/value are sometimes difficult to evaluate and is frustrating to judge. '
