Joey Mello
Willamette
Parli Debates judged this year: 12
Non-Parli Debates judged this year: none
Years Judging Debate: one
Years Competed in Debate: four years in college four years in high school
What School Competed at: College parli high school policy
Making Decisions: 'My decision is based solely on how the debaters argue I should decide; I avoid using my own decision-making philosophy as much as possible. I try to be as unbiased as possible and am comfortable adapting to whatever style of debate a debater choses to use. I would rather adapt to you then have you adapt to me play your game and you ll be fine.'
Decision-making Approach: 'I dont have a particualr decision making approach.'
Assessing Arguments: 'If an argument is dropped it becomes a part of my decision no matter if it is weak or not. However just because an argument has been dropped doesn t neccesarily mean that the debate is over I take the relative weight of the argument and the weight of other arguments in the round into consideration when makeing my decision. I like line by line argumentation especially during constructives while I dont think debaters should abandon the flow during rebuttals I would like to see some more big picture type argumentation made there.'
Presentational Aspects: 'Speed is fine. Good presentation poise eye contact etc. during a speach is nice but not imparative to you winning my ballot.'
Strong Viewpoints: 'no'
Cases, DAs, CPs, Ks, T, etc.: 'Im pretty much comfortable with whatever arguments you chose to make in a debate round. I probably prefer judging a round in which the government team offers a policy but can handle fact or value debate as well. As far as specific positions go I will vote on Topicality Kritiks DA etc. I m not a huge fan of procedural type arguments such as plan vaugness agent specification PICS good bad etc. that doesn t mean that I wont vote for them but I probably hold those arguments to a higher standard and only vote on them when there is demonstrable abuse as a result.'
