View Full Version : Conferance Papers
Every year I go to confrances and here people talk about debate and what is going on in it. They spend a ton of time on debate but sadly they normally do not go farther than that. I think we should add a portion of the site that has a copy of the papers.

I'm interested in this, and not entirely opposed, but can you tell me why this can't be accomplished in the prep time forum?
If this was done, I think it would make sense as a separate forum. Prep time is for debate materials related to preparing debaters on topics, arguments, and substance that advances their career. The academic study of debate serves a separate purpose as it informs participants and judges alike while also being a discussion ground for reform. Additionally, some of the substance based arguments will be theoretically driven and something that would be more appropriate in "On Case" than "prep time" but since it abstracts away from an actual debate and presents it in a paper, this would provide a distinct context.
So while some papers could be posted in prep time, and some could be posted in on case having a third forum that serves the academic advancement of the activity and the participants alike might be useful...and, at least, might be worth a trial run to see if it has any traction or should just be merged.

OK, my next question is who will be in charge of gathering and posting the papers. Mr. Neesen? Mr. Allen? Would y'all care to be moderators of this forum?
I have no connection to the world of academic debate; I probably haven't read an academic article since high school. Therefore, I would be unfit to do so, but there are many other individuals actively involved in this respect (such as neesen) who may be more apt than myself.

We tried this a couple years ago and people just didn't post papers. You might want to try gathering several by backchannel first to see if people actually want to.

Shouldn't this be something that maybe should happen on the NPDA site itself? It seems there is a history of commitment to this there (as evidenced by the archived journel articles on their website)
I would help watch over this area. I also have 2 responces to Dan.
1. Yes and I will work with them to get it done, but that could take a while. Like the next busniess meeting.
2. You want to have it accessed by the whole community and more of the students go here. I think it would help them to see what the judges are writing about and if they feel it is something they want to comment on then they can. The would hopefully increase the amount of thought/writing that is going on about the activity.

debatecooperative.net has been offering this feature ever since it began. I posted a paper there last spring:

It's very easy to do, and fully in line with the mission of that site. Jason has been practically begging people to do it. I concur.

It's fully in line with the mission of our site too. If there's work that people are willing to do to fulfill it, I'll be happy to make a forum for it, link to it, whatever.
Thanks matt I did not know that, I will post stuff there. I also think this sight should have them too. The more places they are the better.
