I do have a challenge for anyone who takes the time to read this. Lets spend this thread posting an news that talks about the wonders of the world, instead of its ills. Let's tell each other what is good in the world.

Best I could come up with today:
Redwood confirmed as world's tallest tree (http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/10/02/tallest.tree.reut/index.html)
I am interested in seeing what you come up with, if anything.

I had to go back into last week to resurrect this, but it's my favorite by far - both for current events and just overall:
"Scientists spy ivory-billed woodpecker in Florida" at http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=scienceNews&storyid=2006-09-29T134200Z_01_N28199400_RTRUKOC_0_US-ENVIRONMENT-WOODPECKER.xml
or you can look at the Bell Labs' webpage at Cornell for all the details, continually updated - http://www.birds.cornell.edu/ivory/
I was having a particularly bad week last year, when I got up early (unable to sleep) and was sort of wandering around the house, listlessly, in the dark, waiting for my coffee to finish brewing. Then, the story of a miracle came on NPR.

I survived an appendectomy last week.

Well, I survived.
At least so far. The Broncos are doing better, and I finally took Marcus' advice to start watching "South Park," which is so funny that me and Samantha nearly pee our pants. I think you just have to be from Colorado to understand jokes about the Platte River...

I wanted to share: The most educational debate I have been a participant of happened last weekend at the NPDA championship. It was round 5, between Washburn and Washington on making the HPV vaccine mandatory for middle school girls.
This round is what debate is all about (at least for me): excellent clash, terrific knowledge of the topic, excellent speakers, and creative argumentation. The positions were fresh and unique.
It was a timely topic for me personally, as my own daughter will be entering the sixth grade soon and I knew zero about the topic. The topic by itself would have done little to spark my interest; I remember almost dreading the round because of my ignorance of the topic. It was these four debaters who taught me much about the resolution and so much more. For the first time ever as a judge, I went out and did research on a topic made interesting and important to me by the teams that I was evaluating.
The oral critique after the round continued the idea exchange as I explained to the debaters how they made the round, special for me. After the various other threads about NPDA, I am happy to report post-round disclosure where decorum ruled the day, and at least for this judge, education was extended beyond the round.

Noah Thomas Stannard was born at 8:09 PM last night, and he, along with his mother Andrea, are both doing great. Does that meet the good news challenge?

Absolutely it does, Matt. Congrats. Your life just changed forever. Again. :-)
Congrats Matt!
Also, Matt wins joke of the tournament for NPTE. Lunch on Sunday (with his son in the room):
"Would you please not say "Fuck!" in front of my son?"
The whole room froze and looked mortified until Matt let us off the hook.
